The Spiritual Aspect

The spiritual aspect of Beta Sigma Psi is what sets us apart from the other houses in the Greek Community. We were founded upon the Lutheran faith in 1925. Since then, our first 'S' has been central to who we are. Beta Sigma Psi strives to promote the development of Lutheran Gentlemen at Iowa State University. Many Beta Sigs attend Memorial Lutheran Church (LCMS), which is less than one block from the house. Although members are free to attend the church of their choosing, they are encouraged to attend church weekly at Memorial or at Lutheran Campus Ministry in the University Lutheran Center (ELCA), which is about 2 blocks from the chapter house.

Inside Memorial Lutheran Church

Members participate in a number of different activities related to building their relationships with God. They participate in Prayer Breakfasts, where one of the pastors from Memorial Lutheran Church or Lutheran Campus Minitery come to our house to have breakfast at 6:45 a.m., followed by a short devotional at 7, which gets done around 7:20 so that members can make it to their 8 a.m. classes, if they have them.

We also have an evening Bible study with Pastor Dave from Memorial Lutheran Church that is open to all members, no matter which church they call home.

Some of our members are involved with Memorial Brass Choir, Memorial Bells, choirs at both Lutheran churches, ushering, teaching Sunday School, and other general volunteering at the churches. Many members are very involved with the college ministries at both Lutheran churches.

During the week there are also a number of different campus ministries that our members are involved with. They typically have a more contemporary feel to them, and almost everybody else in attendance is a college-aged student, so it makes for a good place to meet other ISU students who are also Christians. A number of our members are leaders in these ministries, too. Their leadership varies from leading Bible studies to leading worship services.

It is sometimes through the things that are not planned by the chaplain, like conversation with roommates and other men in the house, that the real Spiritual side of the house shows it true colors. Beta Sigma Psi is a great stepping stone to develop leaders so that you can be a future leader in the Lutheran Church where ever they are!
