FAQ

What is Epsilon's policy on alcohol?

Beta Sigma Psi - Epsilon Chapter is a restricted fraternity by definition and has a strict policy with respect to underage drinking. We have a "21 is 21" policy that says if a member is 21 years or older, they may possess and consume alcohol in a responsible manner in the chapter house. As for the people who are under 21 years old, there is zero-tolerance to the possession or consumption of alcohol on chapter property.

Does Beta Sigma Psi Haze?

No. Beta Sigma Psi was founded as a national Lutheran Fraternity, and as such we do not harass, abuse, violate, degrade, or humiliate our members. We would be going against our ideals as a Lutheran Fraternity if we hazed.

Beta Sigma Psi follows a no hazing policy in accordance with our national by-laws, our chapter by-laws, Interfraternity Council (IFC) by-laws, Iowa State University rules and regulations, local laws, and state laws.

I'm interested in joining Beta Sigma Psi but I already signed my dorm contract. What are my options?

No problem! If you join Beta Sig, we can help you break your dorm contract without the fines normally associated with it, even during the summer! If you have penalties associated with the breaking a residence hall contract, we can even help cover that cost! If you want to live in the dorms your freshman year or first semester, we even have out of house membership which allows you to be a member of Beta Sig while not living at the facility! Talk with our recruitment chairs and they can help you through the process.

When can I move in?

Although move-in date varies from year to year, it has traditionally been the Wednesday prior to the start of classes. This gives you plenty of time to settle in, get to know the guys in the house, and get prepared for classes to begin.

Are there hidden costs?

We have a contracted amount that covers all of the areas of the house that is necessary for one to live here. Extra things are not in the contracted amount, such as members choosing to go out to eat instead of having a meal at the house. Other extra expenses may include things like t-shirts, apparel, and other items that are optional for members to buy or not. None of those things are required for any member.

What is the process for joining?

First, our process is almost always informal. This means the Recruitment Chairs will give you a tour of the house (if you are visiting or live in Ames), take you to eat, and get to know you. During that time, we will tell you more about Beta Sigma Psi. You can ask any questions you want, and we will answer them for you. If you seem like a good fit for our fraternity, we will schedule further visits to discuss your potential membership. Throughout the summer the Recruitment Chairs will also host events to give you a chance to meet other Beta Sigs. During these events many active Beta Sigs will be present to give you perspective on what it is like to live at Beta Sigma Psi if you accept an invitation to join.

Do I have to move my possessions out of house during breaks?

Over fall, winter, and spring breaks members are free to leave all their possessions at the house. If they need to retrieve anything, the house will be available to them. During the summer, members have the option of continuing to live at the house. If they decide to move out for the summer, they are allowed to leave two boxes in storage and any large furniture, as space allows. Again, if they need to retrieve any item, the house will be open and available to them.
